Title: First and Last
Author: Rachael Duncan
Genre: Contemporary Romance
We’ve been inseparable since she moved next door when we were six years old. Then it all changed.
I don’t know when or why, but suddenly I want more. I want her. The problem was she didn’t.
But everything changes when you cross that line between friends and lovers.
I thought convincing her to give us a chance would be my biggest hurdle. Little did I know that was only the beginning.
Mia consumes all of my thoughts when we’re apart, and all of my senses when we’re together. There’s no going back to the way things were and I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure she isn’t just my first, but also my last.
Will we be able to hold on, or will our relationship go up in flames?
***This is a friends to lovers romance that is a complete standalone.***
Oh the FEELS! I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but after reading this book, I was a mess of epic proportions. First let me say that I love when new to me authors surprise me. I picked First and Last up because the concept and blurb sounded like an enjoyable read. Instead of just a quick and fun read, we were taken on a journey through the lives of Mia and Blake. Told from Blake's point of view, and mostly in flashbacks, First and Last takes us through the ups and downs of two people who were always meant to be together. Best friends since Mia moved in next door at 6 years old, Blake and Mia have been inseparable almost their entire lives. Through romantic relationships with other people, adolescence, loss and burgeoning feelings for each other, Blake and Mia have always kept one promise to each other... to go through every first together.
It was a refreshing change reading a story told from only the male point of view. We are witness to Blake's thoughts and struggles as his feelings change from mere friendship to something deeper. I have to admit that I was team Blake throughout the entire book. It was different from anything I've read, having Mia be the one screwing up their relationship. I'm sure this won't be a popular opinion, but as I continued to read I felt strongly that Mia was the one pulling away while Blake was trying so hard to hold on.
Duncan sure knows how to tell a story. I was emotionally invested in the characters from the very beginning. When they hurt, I hurt. When they were happy, I was happy. The further I read the faster my heart beat, just waiting, knowing something is going to happen that I will either love or will utterly break me and I was so right. Emotionally charged and full of so much feeling, if you read any book this summer, this has got to be it.
